A possible RV at Best Buy in Indiana — No Cigar

Saturday, January 27th, 2007

During the RV Hunt, I found a 29′ 1994 Fleetwood Tioga Arrow out in Best Buy RV in Indiana, everything looked pretty good. I like the sleepover cab, but Christine really hated how bumpy it road and not being able to see out the front window when she sat at the dinette.

It showed that it only had 26 hours on the generator — I’m not sure I believe that:

It was a class C RV, but there were some issues. There was a crack in the shower. Steve McBarron (salesguy) said they could fix it by replacing the fiberglass shell, but then they said they couldn’t find it and after screwing around with that they tried patching it and made the mistake of sending me pictures — they did a crappy repair job.

The RV at Best Buy, a 24′ Fleetwood, also had some leaks in the front. Jeffrey actually found some ice (it was winter while we were hunting) in the front bunk cupboards. Not a good sign. The shower repair job definitely didn’t give me a warm fuzzy that they were going to fix that correctly. I was told they put the van into a “container room” that allowed them to pressurize it to check the seals. I didn’t believe it. I want to see it next time I’m up there. Here’s the ice.

And a couple of shots from the outside area.

One thing I did learn is that I do NOT want carpeting in the kitchen…Ugh.

I bought an RV on eBay — until I saw it

Real Nice 1998 30′ Four Winds 5000 52k miles No Reserve.  It was selling for $13000.  I thought I got a good deal.  Prior to purchasing it, I had someone take it to a dealer to check it out.  The dealer said everything looked fine.  I had to finally drive out to Indiana to pick it up with my father-in-law.  When I got there, it turned out it was a piece of crap.  Goes to show you, not everything on eBay is what it seems.  The pictures looked good, but they were deceiving.  It looked like it was run really hard inside.  The hunt is still on.

RV Trips

I was going through the rationale of why or why not buy an RV.  My wife and I took the kids down to the RV show in Covington and they came back really excited about a Trailer or Motorhome.   The kids are at a good age (6 and 9) to have an RV and to use it to go on trips.  The price of gas sucks, but it would be a lot of fun.  And with wireless internet, all I need is a job where I can host a site that I don’t have to be near all the time and no servers to maintain.
